Racer Band Annouces 2009 Percussion Staff

Josh Powell: Co-Caption Head
Josh Powell is in his third year working with the MSU Racer Band. He received a Bachelor's degree in Music from Murray State in 2004, where he was active in the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and Racer Band. Josh has taught and arranged for many high schools throughout Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana. He has spent the last six years as the front ensemble arranger and instructor for Murray High School in Murray, Kentucky. Josh has performed with the Paducah and Jackson Symphony Orchestras, and is now the drummer for Variety! Music, Memories, and More in Grand Rivers, Kentucky.

Shane Smith: Co-Caption Head
Shane Smith is a former Racer Band member who marched with the drumline for 3 years, while serving as Tenor Line section leader for 1 year and co section leader of the drumline for 2 years. He has been an instructor with the drumline for 6 years serving as both tenor tech, co percussion caption head and arranger. Shane is currently the percussion director / arranger for Calloway County High School and has been for the past 10 years. He remains involved with his students year-round by giving private lessons. Through the years Shane has founded, arranged and headed several percussion groups in all areas. The 2007 indoor group Intermix, won the gold medal at SCGC Championships in the Independent A class. He was percussion caption head of Eklipse Drum and Bugle Corps in 2004. Shane marched in the tenor line of Pioneer drum and Bugle corps 1999 and 2001 (section leader). He is currently the tenor tech for Pioneer Drum and Bugle Corps. He also plans to finish his Music Education degree (Percussion) at Murray State University this upcoming Fall. Andy Howell: Pit Instructor
Andy Howell is a former Racer Band member who was part of the front ensemble for three years (section leader for two). He also marched for West Athens indoor percussion in 2006. He was the pit instructor for the South Oldham High School 2007-2008 school year as well as the Calloway County High School for the 2008- 2009 school year. Andy is now a Music Business major at Murray State, with a focus in percussive studies.

2009 Racer Band Color Guard Staff Announced

The Racer Band is pleased to announce their Color Guard Design Team for the 2009 season. Returning to the team are Brooke Suiter, Hannah Stark, Katie Herrenbruck, and Lindsey Smith.

Brooke Suiter is a former Racer Band member who marched with the color guard for 5 years (1999-2003), while serving as the section leader for 3. She has been the instructor and choreographer through the years 2005-2008. She is also the instructor and choreographer for the Calloway County High School and Calloway County Middle School color guard. She has had the opportunity to teach with these schools for the past 10 years. Each year, her groups score consistently well at competition. Brooke has recently obtained a job teaching music K-5 at Mayfield Elementary School. For the upcoming year, she will write one song and be the coordinator for the 2009 Racer Band.

Hannah Stark is a former Racer Band member who marched with the color guard for 4 years (1997-2000), while serving as the section leader for 3. She was the instructor through the years 2001-2005. This is her second year teaching Title I at Murray Elementary School, and previously she taught 1st grade for 5 years. For the upcoming year, Hannah will write one song and be the consultant for the 2009 Racer Band.

Katie Herrenbruck is a former Racer Band member who marched with the color guard for 4 years (2005-2008), while serving as the section leader for 3. In 2005 she was a member of the Southwind Drum and Bugle Corps, and most recently she was a member of the DCI Finalist Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps in 2008. She has also taught the color guard and winter guard programs at Madisonville North Hopkins High School and Murray High School. Katie is currently a senior at Murray State University working towards obtaining her Biology Secondary Education degree. She will write one song and be one of the daily staff members for the 2009 Racer Band.

Lindsey Smith is a former Racer Band member who marched with the color guard for 1 year. She has previously marched with Eklipse from 2002-2003 and has helped teach at Calloway County High School with the color guard for the past 3 years. She has taken dance for the past ten years and has had the opportunity to teach dance for the past five years. She taught one year of Intermix indoor guard as the dance instructor. She is currently a junior at Murray State University working towards obtaining a degree in Art Photography. Lindsey will write one song and be one of the daily staff members for the 2009 Racer Band.

The Racer Band is fortunate to have a consistent group of instructors and choreographers who continue to be committed to the success of the Racer Band color guard. With this consistency comes a steady improvement into one of the best college color guards in the area. Brooke, Hannah, Katie, and Lindsey all agree that it is very exciting to be a part of this incredible group, and they are looking forward to another great season!
