Weekly Absence MSU Class conflicts and sickness of two or more days. Requires documentation for absence to be excused. This is kind of absence is for those that will on an ongoing basis leave early, or arrive late because of a class conflict. MSU class conflicts are no longer automatically approved. These absences require documentation so that members do not abuse this courtesy. Members cannot miss more than one hour of practice per week due to class conflicts. Long term illnesses of more two or more rehearsals require students to provide a doctor's note when they return to practice. Work, MSU clubs, greek organizations, residential conflicts, last minute studying, paper writing will not be approved.

Please review all of our 2017 performances @
All Performance Absences must be submitted prior to August 5th.
Perfect attendance is expected from all members of the Racer Band. By showing up at camp, you are saying, “I’m in 100%! No problems with the performance schedule.” The official schedule is posted on racerband.com. You must be pro-active and double-check your schedule. If you find about performance conflict after the August 5th request deadline, it may be considered, but we post the schedule in the spring and keep it updated as quickly possible, so members can plan their schedules effectively. Missing a performance is huge, Racer Band is an organization in which everyone starts, and there is no one to fill the void if you were to be absent for a performance.
See the following procedures to have an performance absence excused.
Performance AbsenceAll performance require documentation for the absence to be excused. (program note, note from funeral home, call from a parent, or doctor's note) Last minute requests are not considered, except for family death, extreme illness. Absences must be significant life experiences. Unexcused performance absences may result in the failure of the class.

Those arriving Saturday will check in at the fine arts building first, then go to your permanent housing assignment, to drop off all your stuff. Then go to Elizabeth. Take bedding and clothes etc for Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Everyone will be living in Elizabeth Saturday, and Sunday. We will move into your permanent housing assignments Monday night at 7pm.
Those arriving Monday: Housing is arranging for you to drop off your belongings from noon-1pm. You will not be allowed to stay any longer than this hour (nor will your parents). 12-1 is for drop off of your stuff only. Housing will lock the building up at 1pm (they have training that day). You will have full access to your room again at 7pm Monday(that same day).
Here is a draft of the schedule for the first couple of days (Subject change)
Woodwinds and Brass...when you arrive Wednesday...you move into your permanent housing assignments :)
Marching Shoes: All band members must have WHITE band shoes, not nursing shoes or any other substitute. If you already have white band shoes, you are all set – no need to get new ones. If you need shoes, you will need to purchase a pair at check-in. Shoes will be fitted and paid for at check-in. All shoes will be shipped directly to Murray State and passed out at a rehearsal. The cost will be $32. Cash, or check's to Robert Kapp & Associates only. No debit or credit cards please.
All shoes must be fitted and paid for by Aug 9th. After that date, contact a Uniform Officer so we can place your own private order. (You will pay more $50, because of shipping/etc.)
Color Guard will have a separate shoe – this is handled at camp (approx. $25)
Instrumentation: To make the strongest Racer Band possible, all members should perform where they are most proficient (what you did in high school marching band). Racer Band is not the place to try something new! Instrument transfers will be handled on an as-needed basis (email for more information). If we have already talked, plan on what we discussed. QUESTIONS? – email Mr. Fannin.
Music Majors – you must perform on your major instrument. Exceptions require a request to Mr. Fannin and ap- proval by Dr. Wurgler (Department Chair), Mr. Johnson (Director of Bands), Mr. Erickson (Unit Chair), and your private teacher. Email Mr. Fannin if you would like to be considered to perform in another area/instrument.
Member Criteria: 98% of all successful high school band members will be able to meet the following Racer Band membership criteria:
There is a football game a few days before Halloween. For the game, Racer Band will put on a themed musical performance and members are asked to wear Halloween costumes! Start Planning your costume today. It's a cool tradition. More details to follow at camp.
Because of this year's schedule, DCI marching members will miss all of band camp. Racer Band members marching with drum corps must be back by Monday, August the 14th for our 6:00 pm practice. DCI Racer Band members need to confirm their membership with Mr. Fannin prior to the start of Racer Band Camp (Call Mr Fannin @ 270-210-1429). These members should also notify their section leaders of their corps involvement. Contacting Mr. Fannin and the section leaders ensures them a spot in RB shows. Marching in a drum corps is the only excused absence for Racer Band Camp. No Racer Band members will miss any days of camp to watch DCI Championships.
