attendance policies
Attendance is required for all rehearsals, performances, and events. All excused absences require prior communication to Dr. Shoupe via email and appropriate documentation to be provided (i.e., a doctor’s note or a faculty excuse letter). Absences are not considered excused until confirmed and approved by Dr. Shoupe.
Rehearsals
An excused absence for any rehearsal may be requested through Dr. Shoupe via email. This is a request and will be subject to approval by Dr. Shoupe before the absence is considered excused. Students may be requested to complete a make-up assignment as a condition of the excused absence.
- Penalties for unexcused absences and tardies are as follows:
- No penalty for an approved excused absence or tardy that has been communicated to Dr. Shoupe and approved prior to the absence, pending completion of any given make-up assignments if requested.
- An unexcused tardy will result in a partial letter grade deduction. Grades will be deducted as follows:
- 3 unexcused tardies = 1 full letter grade deduction
- 5 unexcused tardies = 2 full letter grade deductions
- 7 unexcused tardies = 3 full letter grade deductions
- 9 or more unexcused tardies = failure of the course
- A half letter grade deduction will be given for each unexcused rehearsal absence if a request was placed and then denied.
- A full letter grade dedication for each unexcused rehearsal absence if no documentation was submitted and/or the absence was not communicated (i.e. a no-call, no-show).
- The following requests will not be considered and are automatically denied: Greek/rush events, clubs, work schedule, residential conflicts, or last-minute homework/studying.
- Racer Band is considered to be an academic class and it is the student’s responsibility to manage their time and schedule around their course schedules.
performance absences
- Students who are tardy to the designated performance call-time will receive a half-letter dedication from their total grade. Additional penalties and repeat offenses may include removal from pregame or halftime field performances.
- Documentation is required for any performance absence requesting to be excused, and must be submitted one month prior to the absence. Last minute requests will not be considered: exceptions include immediate emergencies such as family death, hospitalization, or extreme illness requiring immediate care; documentation will be required and must be submitted to Dr. Shoupe within 48 hours of the emergency absence.
- Unexcused absences or requested absences to performances that have been denied, will result in an automatic failure of the course.
RECURRING CONFLICT DUE TO CLASS SCHEDULE
All class conflict requests must be submitted to Dr. Shoupe by Tuesday, August 27th, 2024. Students will be required to submit a full copy of their schedule for their request to be approved. Students may be asked to choose another section of the conflicting course, if it is available and/or an override can be granted.
